What a way to kick off the new 2016/2017 season! In a game of ups and a few heart attacks, Liverpool have kicked off with a win against bogey men Arsenal at the Emirates. Arsenal began in the ascendancy and I have to admit I was worried that the theme of Liverpool’s previous season would come back to haunt them and when Alberto Moreno scythed Theo Walcott down in the box, my heart sank. However, Mignolet (another player who could lose his place in the side) made a flying save to deny the same player. Walcott would punish us a minute later with a well taken finish – Moreno once more to blame, too far forward to track back. So 1-0 Arsenal.
Now, if this had been the Liverpool of last season against Arsenal, we’d need something special to drag us out. Looks like Philippe Coutinho is that player – and boy did he do something special, curling a superb free kick around the 5 man wall and into the top corner. 1-1 at half time. Second half began with Liverpool suddenly in the ascendancy and thanks to their persistence and pressing, got three goals in the space of 20 minutes to find themselves 1-4 to the good – Sadio Mane’s being the pick of the bunch.
However, this wouldn’t be a typical Liverpool game without some woeful defending involved. To be fair, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal was due to a deflection but Lallana and Clyne should have defended better. Chambers goal was just a result of conceding an unnecessary free kick in a dangerous area, and with Santi Cazorla’s quality in delivery, it was a foregone conclusion. However, Liverpool held on.
Post Mortem: Klavan is going to be an incredible bargain for us. At 30, he has plenty of time and sufficient experience to be a rock at the back. Lovren needs to work on his defensive positioning, got sucked in a couple of times, allowing Ramsey to get in behind him. Alberto Moreno needs to go, his defending is as woeful as his new haircut. Roberto Firmino is no striker, am surprised Origi or Ings weren’t played up front. Mane and Wijnaldum will be stars for us. Now Klopp, please do me a favor and GET A NEW LEFT BACK PLEASE!!! That’s it from me, YNWA and here’s to next weekend! Good to have you back Premier League!
I’ll leave you with highlights from the game from my favorite Liverpool YouTuber Anfield Legend. Enjoy!
